Best Practices in Image Enhancement
PTFS has developed a more advanced image enhancement process that can be utilized to improve poor quality grayscale images.
Image enhancement is a technique utilized in document imaging to improve the quality and Optical Character Recognition results. This process allows for searchable ASCII text. .
Conventional image technology includes auto-cropping, line removal and character smoothing. When a grayscale scan of a document image is performed from paper or film source material these processes aren’t necessarily available.
With poor quality source material, this can be detrimental to obtaining a searchable and adequate scanned version. When lines are drawn overtop of a character it almost guarantees that the OCR’ed character will not be correct.
While one hundred percent (100%) clean-up and removal is not always feasible, the enhancement provides a significant improvement in the OCR output.
